The Ultimate Car Maintenance Guide: Summer Edition

June 6, 2016 by Kala Ross

During the summer, the sweltering heat puts extra stress on your vehicle. To ensure that your ride remains prepared for the elevated temperatures, it is important to keep it in tip-top condition. Here are some of the most important maintenance tips to remember.

Install a New Air Filter
According to a test conducted by the federal government, a dirty air filter can dramatically hinder a vehicle’s performance. The engine will not be able to take in a steady supply of fresh air. Among the best ways to keep your engine running strong is to replace the air filter on a yearly basis. Fortunately, most air filters are cheap and very easy to install.

Check the Tire Pressure
Research shows that underinflated tires are far more likely to suddenly blow out. Don’t rely solely on your eyes to determine whether or not a tire is underinflated. To obtain an accurate reading, you must actually check the pressure using an electronic tire gauge. A good rule of thumb is to check your tire pressure every three weeks. Not only do properly inflated tires last longer, but they also help your vehicle to return the best possible gas mileage.

Battery Testing
Before the summer arrives, be sure to check your battery’s expiration date. Hot weather can kill an old car battery. It is also advisable to have your battery tested. It is only a matter of time before a weak battery leaves you stranded in the scorching sun. If you happen to notice any corrosion on your battery cables, use a toothbrush to scrub them down with a small amount of baking soda and water.

Cooling System Inspection
To prevent your engine from overheating in the hot weather, take the time to inspect the entire cooling system. The coolant level needs to remain full at all times. You should also examine your rubber coolant hoses. If one of the hoses looks deteriorated or feels overly soft, have it replaced immediately.

Change Your Oil
Consumer Reports lists changing the oil as one of the key ways to extend the life of your car. If your vehicle isn’t equipped with an oil life monitor, consult the owner’s manual to find out the recommended oil change interval. The motor oil serves more than just a single purpose. Aside from its ability to lubricate the engine, the motor oil also helps keep it cool. Never make the mistake of allowing the oil level to become dangerously low. Make it a priority to check the oil level at least once a month.
