3 Simple Ways to Lower Your Boat Insurance Premium

June 30, 2016 by Kala Ross

More than 75 million people in the great United States of America make it a point to take the boat out on a gorgeous day for some fun in the sun, according to Bankrate.com. With so many natural lakes, gorgeous beaches and intracoastal waterways on which to take water skis, tubes and even just a cooler with decadent snacks, it’s one of America’s favorite ways to enjoy a hot summer day. Recreational boating is something most everyone enjoys, but the insurance premium aspect of boating might be the least enjoyable part of the entire process.

Many casual boaters are under the impression their homeowners insurance or automobile insurance covers their boat. This is not the case. Boat insurance is a requirement for anyone who makes the decision to purchase and drive a boat. According to RescueDiver.org, boating accidents can happen anytime. They can be serious or minor, but the fact of the matter is that boat owners need insurance to pay for damage of either type. A boat is like a car in that it is an expensive purchase, and you want to protect your expensive purchases. If you cannot afford to come out of pocket to pay for repairs and accidents in which your boat might be involved, it’s a great idea to have boat insurance. It’s also a great idea to see what you can do to lower that premium and have a few extra dollars in your pocket every year.

Tackle A Boating Safety Course

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and even the Coast Guard offer boating safety courses all year. The cost varies, the times vary and the locations vary. However, if you can obtain a certificate of completion from a course such as this to present to your insurance company, you might qualify for an impressive discount on your premium.

Clean Up Your Driving Record

Did you know your insurance company takes your personal driving record into account when deciding what type of driver you are on the water? If you have some issues on your license, it’s time to take those driving classes and get rid of those points to clear up what you can as soon as possible. Additionally, stay out of trouble on the road and your premiums stay low.

Buy A New Boat

The simple fact of the matter is that older boats are more expensive to insure than newer boats. Additionally, bigger boats are more expensive to insure than shorter boats. If you can go with a smaller boat that’s a bit newer, you will find that your insurance company is happy to lower the cost of your insurance premiums and save you a few dollars here and there.
