Where did those keys go? Certainly I didn’t leave the milk out all night! We all experience those moments in life, especially as we age. As the old saying goes “the mind is a terrible thing to lose”. As if people needed another reason to put one less candle on the birthday cake each year, research shows that your brain’s capability to hold out against memory loss and other damages weakens as you grow older. Before you stop putting candles on the cake altogether, there are some exercises you can do to combat this process and slow down aging while revving up your memory.
In this day and age, technology makes it all too easy for our brains to get complacent. There is no need to remember anything when it’s all stored on our smart phones. Have to pay a bill on Monday? We just set the reminder alarm on our phones. If you don’t want to forget the eggs at the grocery store, just make the list on an app that will tell you when you’ve grabbed all your items. These things are wonderfully convenient, but won’t help with building brawny brains. A great exercise is to test your recall ability. Write down a few things on a list and memorize them, after an hour go back and see how many you correctly remembered.
Adding Up the Benefits
If you’re like most people, the best thing about graduating school was that you never had to do math again. Calculators are now so accessible that we rarely have to figure out any math problems more complicated than 2+2; but it’s very important for our brains to keep refining its math skills. Doing math in your head is a fantastic way to keep the mind sharp. If you really want to challenge yourself, practice it while taking a walk.
Brains Can Play Sports Too
Staying active has so many benefits for the rest of our body that we often overlook the benefits it has for our minds. Another excellent way to build strength north of your ears is to learn a sport that uses both mind and body.Yoga is a great example of an activity that contributes to overall health.
The brain is an amazing thing, and there are so many ways to keep it in top condition. Anytime you learn a new skill or try a new activity, it’s helping your mind stay fit. From cross word puzzles to playing an instrument, brain exercises are anything but boring. Have fun with them, enjoy the benefits and never drink milk when it’s left on the counter.
